Built Environments

Presented by Charlotte Street and The Epsten Gallery at The Epsten Gallery

The Epsten Gallery is pleased to present Built Environments, an immersive exhibition featuring site-specific, multi-media installations with themes of design, architecture, nature, and public and private space that invite conversations exploring various impacts of human activity within our world.

Built Environments is organized in conjunction with the Charlotte Street Foundation’s 20th anniversary program: Every Street is Charlotte Street, and features five Charlotte Street Award recipients: Ricky Allman, Jorge García Almodóvar, Anthony Baab, Ke-Sook Lee & Judi Ross. Built Environments is curated by Heather Lustfeldt, Curator, Epsten Gallery. The show occurs during The International Sculpture Conference in Kansas City October 25-29, 2017. Through experiential, integrative art works, a unique space of contemplation, exploration and wonder emerges for visitors of the Epsten Gallery.

Ricky Allman explores the interaction between built and natural environments in an experimental, futurist-oriented piece combining, for the first time, painting, sculpture and site-specific installation. Anthony Baab references consumerism and mass-production within larger-than-life collages created from repurposed packaging material from his Cover the Earth series, and Judi Ross reaches beneath the sea in her dazzling monochromatic installation, if the earth trembles, incorporating glazed ceramics, shimmering light and sound.

Through exquisite needlework, thread, vintage linen and splashes of blue, Ke-Sook Lee hearkens personal metaphor and womanhood in Burst to Bloom, invoking garden and sky. And Jorge García Almodóvar revisits modular structure, minimalism and the grid in his site-specific work, LEVEL (BE-017), composed of layered slabs that function as both painting and sculpture.
