Towering at 40 feet tall with a wingspan of 65 feet, Maxie – The World’s Largest Goose was built in 1974 by a Kansas City artist, David Jackson. Jackson was commissioned by the town of Sumner, Missouri, to create the massive statue to commemorate their status as the “Wild Goose Capital of the World”. For over four decades, Maxie has been a beloved monument to the distinctive hunting, wildlife, and conservationist heritage and culture of the greater Sumner area. Maxie has also become an iconic roadside attraction and a whimsical piece of art that has touched generations of families.

David Jackson passed away in 2013 and his three daughters who live in the Kansas City metro area began a journey to celebrate and preserve their father’s legacy as the creator of Maxie. Along the way, they learned about the urgent restoration and repairs currently needed for Maxie. The daughters, in conjunction with the Sumner Community Betterment organization and in affiliation with the Chariton County Community Foundation, are raising funds to help restore Maxie for generations to come.

The Maxie Restoration Committee has obtained inspections from structural engineers and fiberglass specialists to determine what is needed to restore the statue. The estimated cost is $45,000 and work could begin as soon as this spring if the funds are raised.
