Front/Space is a storefront apartment located in the heart of downtown Kansas City repurposed for non-commercial exhibitions, installations, readings, screenings, concerts, workshops, forums, research + publishing projects. To our creative community, we are a soundboard, a platform, a jumping-off point to which emerging and established artists, creatives, writers and musicians utilize in order to further their ideas, dreams and experiments. To many, we have provided a space for which “anything goes”, a place where creatives can explore their ideas in a public setting and make mistakes without the worry of judgment.

Front/Space has featured over seventy exhibitions and countless more readings, screenings, concerts, workshops, forums, research, and publishing projects. In the past, Front/Space has been extremely successful at offering experimental programming and exhibitions to the art community of Kansas City. Our reach has extended far beyond the midwest and this past year alone we exhibited artists from New York, Los Angeles, and Australia.

In the past year, we have shifted our mission towards showing artists from marginalized communities who were excited about offering free community programs. Front/Space has helped artists host potlucks, organizing clothing drives for people in need, funding the fabrication and distribution of reusable menstrual products for refugees seeking asylum, and more.

Front/Space was founded by Leandra Burnett, Sarah Murphy, Maxwell Mehlstaub, and Brooks Fitzpatrick in 2010. Since then, the gallery has been under the leadership of various artists and organizers including Lindsay Deifik (2011-13 resident, co-director, curator), Kent Szlauderbach (2012-2014 resident, co-director, editor), Christine Dietze (2013-2014), Madeline Gallucci (2014-2018), Kendell Harbin (2014-2018). Currently, the space is led by Jahaira Aguilar (2018-present), and Patricia Bordallo Dibildox (2018-present).
