Wednesday, August 16, 2023, 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Join us for 816 Day at the City Market with Traditional Music Society: Soundz of Samba, Circus Scorpius and the Underground Homies.
The event starts promptly at 5:30 pm. Food and drink available for purchase at the Market. Bring your folding chairs and blankets!
Performance Details:
Traditional Music Society: Soundz of Samba | Take a musical excursion that will engulf you in the biggest parade in the entire world – Carnival of Rio de Janeiro! Bass drums, bells, shakers, snares, and whistles all recreate the national rhythm and dance of Brazil—Samba. Soundz of Samba truly depicts the color and pageantry of this four-day-long event in which marching bands come from all over Brazil to express their culture and the beginning of spring.
Circus Scorpius | Bing! is a somewhat improvised circus production with audience participation. Audience members get to play a game of BINGO–err, BING in this case–while the cast performs the circus act associated with the randomly drawn BING ball number. Potential acts include a variety of aerial and acrobatic numbers from Circus Scorpius’s repertoire.
Underground Homies | Underground Homies feature artists Steddy P (born and raised in KC) and GIPSON (a 5 year transplant) that focuses on being “Made in KC” as people. It will occur at the City Market 816 Day celebration. Having artists from both sides of the KC experiences, audiences will engage with two stories that share a similar vein- thankfulness for the city and the shaping it has brought. These two artists also have different styles of music which will help create a narrative that highlights the diaspora of sound and culture the city has.
This event is free and open to the public. Ride the KC Streetcar to the event, walk or park in one of the many parking spaces available in Downtown Kansas City.
