Talk | Meditative Stillness and Exuberant Energy

Dr. Maribeth Graybill, the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Curator of Asian Art, Portland Art Museum, discusses works featured in Portland Art Museum’s exhibition Poetic Imagination in Japanese Art: Selections from the Collection of Mary and Cheney Cowles. Drawn from one of the West’s finest collections of Japanese painting and calligraphy, the exhibition introduced audiences to more than 100 works from the Cowles’ holdings. Deeply informed by long-established canons of taste and scholarship in Japanese art history, many of the paintings are of exceptional historical importance within the development of a particular genre or artist’s career. All reflect the collectors’ adventurous spirit and eagerness to embrace little-known artists.
