Art as Mentorship
Art as Mentorship’s mission is to empower young people to write their own success stories. Our year-round programming braids youth mentorship and community empowerment, using music as a vehicle to change the narrative around race, history and mental health through our Rebel Song Academy and the expansive AMERI’KANA Project. We believe the future will be made brighter by enabling the healing qualities of music to unite us.
The Rebel Song Academy: our unique, trauma-informed songwriting program helps underserved immigrant, Latinx and low-income young artists create their own vision for a successful life through access to world-class mentorship, real-world skill development, and mental health support. Along with our core RSA program, Art as mentorship is running six satellite RSA programs in area schools in 2023.
AMERI’KANA: expansive project exploring and celebrating the BIPOC influence on American music through documentaries, workshops, and the annual Celebrate AMERI’KANA Music & Arts festival. Celebrate AMERI’KANA is transitioning to a free event in 2023, and was chosen to represent Kansas City for the 2024 One Nation/One Project national arts and wellness initiative.
