Scotland-born Adam Smith (1723-90), hailed as the founding father of economics and credited as the founding father of capitalism, was the author of two published books: The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations (1776). Smith’s writings delved into psychological observations of human nature, morality, and economics that influenced peers such as Charles Darwin (1809-82) and brought him acclaim during his lifetime and beyond.
